Andrew Nichols

Marine Biologist, Guide and Photographer

Andrew Nichols has a wide range of experience. Graduating in 1992 with a BSc in Environmental Science, he has worked in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans, often in multicultural environments. He has worked offshore on contracts as an MMO with the oil and gas industry conducted scientific research skippered small vessels, worked in  ecotourism development and communications including photography and videography. Andrew has his own photography website to promote his photos and videos (www.ecowild.net.au)

Andrew’s field experience includes particularly his involvement in humpback whale research in eastern Australia, with seven years experience in land and vessel-based surveys, photo ID, collection of skin samples, and using specific software to track animals.

Although his focus these days is on cetaceans, Andrew has worked extensively on the coral reefs in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park with threatened species recovery (sea turtles), impact assessment of tourist facilities on outer reefs, and environmental education. He has worked at an international level in environmental communications with IUCN – The World Conservation Union’s Species Survival Commission in Switzerland, and has enjoyed his time over the years as a sea kayak guide and master of small vessels conducting dolphin and whale watching tours in Australia’s Cape Byron Marine Park.
