Guilian is an independent marine mammal
consultant and researcher from
Florianópolis, Brazil. She graduated in
Biological Sciences Bsc. in 2006.
Because her particular interest is in marine
mammals she became involved in several
research projects during her graduation,
notably at Humpback Whale Project and Right
Whale Institution in Brazil and SPLASH in
Mexico. She gained experience working with
photo-id of whales, byopsing,
whale-watching, land-station behavioral
observation (theodolite), bio-acoustic
surveys and others. Her graduation thesis
analysed the dive timing of humpback whales.
During her time in Mexico she worked for
five months at Archipielago Revillagigedo as
a photographer and zodiac driver. Moreover,
she worked in Baja California (Programa de
Investigacíon de Mamíferos Marinos –
University Of Baja, California) matching
flukes for the humpback whale catalog
(photo-id).
During her internship at the Humpback Whale
Project in Abrolhos Archipelago, Brazil she
also had the opportunity to work with
dolphin research, as photo-id and habitat
use patterns of Sotalia fluviatilis.
She lived on Fernando de Noronha, a small
oceanic island in Brazil, where she worked
at Spinner Dolphin Center observing Spinner
dolphins in their natural habitat. On the
same island she assisted in another research
that analyses acoustic repertoire of
Stenella longirostris.
In
all these projects Guilian also worked with
environmental education programs for the
community and activities with children in
schools.
Guilian also has experience with marine
turtles in research projects in Brazil
including handling of sea turtle in
reproduction and feeding area; measurement
of sea turtles though scuba diving and
snorkel diving and measurement of females
turtles at night.
She
is currently setting up her trip to Hawaii
for the whale season where she will take a
lead role using theodolite technology at The
Dolphin Institute.
