Jason Macik

Biologist, Marine Mammal Observer

Realizing at an early age a passion for helping animals and the environment, Jason started working at a domestic veterinary hospital at the age of 14. Working at this hospital for 8 years  solidified his resolve to devote his life to the safe keeping of the natural world.

Jason has volunteered at conservation centres around the world caring for animals such as the tiger, leopard, cougar, clouded leopard, lion, chimpanzee, orangutan, even animals as bazaar as the quirky binturong, kinkajou, and babirusa.

Participating in an internship at Disney's animal kingdom exposed an insatiable appetite for educating the public about the creatures of the world and their conservation. He would further explore this facet of conservation at the Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii by facilitating public interest in animals by educating them via guided tours. In an effort to inspire an awe of the natural world in others Jason contributed his travel experience in corroboration with an ecotourism company. In other travels he has guided people through Costa Rica, Hawaiian islands, Mexico, and China.

Feeling the need to further expand his understanding of the vast world Jason attended schools in New Zealand, Hawaii and the east coast of the US. Upon graduating with a Bachelor's degree in zoology from North Carolina State University Jason sought work in the field and began working as a fisheries observer on  Alaskan king crab fishing vessels in the Bering Sea. This endeavour was the first to bring him to the sea and marked an interesting turning point in his life. His maritime lifestyle continues as a marine mammal observer onboard seismographic survey vessels in the Gulf of Mexico, since 2006.
