Matthew Edwards

Marine Mammal Observer and Guide

After completing his degree in Zoology, Matt undertook a research MSc in Conservation Biology in which he studied Black Rhino feeding preferences in Kenya.

Recently he has worked as a Marine Mammal Observer and a Passive Acoustic Monitor on Seismic vessels and a Navy Frigate. These experiences complimented his previous 18 months offshore seismic MMO and Navigation Processor work for Western Geophysical.

Matt spent a year working in waters around the Falkland Islands on finfish and squid trawlers as a Marine Observer for Falkland Conservation’s Albatross and Petrel Team. He was looking at ways to reduce Incidental Mortality of endangered Albatross and Petrel species. During the time he was onshore he was able to assist in the seabird monitoring. This involved counting and diet-sampling penguins. He was also asked to guide cruise-ship visitors to a penguin colony.

A keen birdwatcher, Matt spent the last three summers as a Research Assistant for the RSPB in Scotland surveying Hen Harrier, Corncrake, Upland waders seabirds. He has worked on environmental projects in the Canadian High Arctic, Philippine rainforest and the Andean Cloud forests.
